What songs set you off on a emotional mood? Is it a TV show or a film or something else? Surely you don’t start weeping at the sight of beans on toast?

I have decided that if England get to the World Cup final I would fly back to watch the game in my home country. The World Cup final is on Sunday 11th July 2010.

Missing British Foods

Missing British Foods

Living away from England has it’s taste bud challenges. I can obtain most British foods from the UK via local shops that stock limited British groceries. But, there are still a few items that are not obtainable and some probably never will be.

You Have A British Accent

You Have A British Accent

When I first arrived in the USA nobody could understand anything me. I think we Brits talk a little too fast for Americans to understand. Maybe if I lived on the East coast then maybe they would digest my accent better?

Lunchtime in California – Daphnes Greek Cafe

Lunchtime in California – Daphnes Greek Cafe

Again being in America everything is different here. A Kebab here is meat on a stick. Doner Kebab does not even exist, so don’t even ask as you will get a puzzled look. They call it ‘Gyros’ (which is probably what Greeks call them also).
I noticed that when I say Kebab it’s like this Ker-Bab. When Americans say it it’s Car-Bob. Another easy confusion which makes me feel like an alien.

I have to say that for once they got the chips right. Fat chips instead of using fries. Many restaurants here ruin our cuisine by using poor frozen french fries. It’s not authentic enough. Sorry. You gotta have fat chips so they can soak up lashings of vinegar. I also got a free tub of Tartar sauce and fresh coleslaw.

Lunchtime in California – Safeway

Lunchtime in California – Safeway

I went home and picked up a sandwich from my local supermarket, my only supermarket in town. Safeway. Or being British and from Essex I like to call them Safeways with the ’s’. This I get corrected on regulary by American people. The same people who inherited our English language from us when we colonized this country over 200 hundred years ago. So who is right now huh? I know it is branded Safeway but there is more than one store in the USA. Duh!

This week I will be reviewing lunchtime food choices here in the City of Santa Rosa where I currently work. I will also be calorie counting as the summer months are coming and I am trying to lose some weight. So don’t be surprised if I got for the more healthy option this week.

20 Quirks About British Food

The most eaten ‘convenience’ food in the world was invented by an English aristocrat with a passion for gambling, the Earl of Sandwich. To ensure he didn’t have to stop playing and to keep his hands clean for the cards, the Earl of Sandwich asked for meat to be put between two slices of bread.
